Regional wholesale rates. Roaming agreements across South America are genuinely more expensive than in Europe, where a single regulatory regime pushed prices down, or in Asia, where volume did. It's why the country pages — Brazil, Chile, Colombia — are worth checking first if you're visiting one or two places.

On the deeper Latin America plans, yes — check the coverage list on the plan you pick. Mexico also sits on the North America plan alongside the US and Canada, and has its own country page. A Mexico-plus-Central-America trip works on one Latin America plan that lists both.

In the larger cities of Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay, on plans marked 5G. Central America and the Andean interior are mostly 4G/LTE, which covers the towns and main highways.

The region's prices make over-buying expensive: start with a mid-size plan if you're mostly in cities with good Wi-Fi, and go a size or two up if you're working or streaming as you travel. Count 100–200 MB a day for maps and messaging, plus 1 GB per hour of video.

Patchy to none. Cusco, Aguas Calientes and the Sacred Valley towns are covered; the trail itself largely isn't. Patagonia has coverage in El Calafate, El Chaltén and Puerto Natales and long empty stretches on Ruta 40. The Amazon basin has service in the river towns — Iquitos, Manaus, Leticia — and nothing between them. Offline maps are essential here.

No. Brazil, Argentina, Peru and others require ID registration for locally bought SIMs — Brazil's requires a CPF tax number, which visitors don't have and which is the single biggest argument for an eSIM in the region. A roaming eSIM needs none of it.
