Will your phone work?

Two questions decide it: does the phone have eSIM hardware, and is it free of a carrier lock. Both take under a minute to answer, and neither needs an app.

Dial *#06#

Open the phone's dialler, type it exactly as written, and the screen fills with identifier numbers on its own — there is nothing to press. Look for a line labelled EID.

  • A 32-digit EID appears. Your phone has eSIM hardware. Move to test 2.
  • No EID, only IMEI. The phone cannot use an eSIM from us or from anyone else. A physical SIM is your option.

This beats every compatibility list, including ours: manufacturers ship the same model with and without eSIM hardware depending on the market it was sold in.

Check for a carrier lock

A locked phone downloads the profile and then refuses to activate it. Phones bought outright are almost never locked; phones on a contract or instalment plan often are.

iPhone
Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock. It should read No SIM restrictions.
Android
There is no reliable universal setting — ask the carrier you bought it from. Unlocking is usually free once the contract is paid off, but allow a few days.

64 models confirmed to support eSIM. The list is not exhaustive — new handsets appear constantly, and *#06# is always the final word.

Known exceptions

Samsung: the same model number, two different phones

Samsung restricts eSIM in software in some markets and sub-variants. Handsets sold in parts of the United States on carrier contracts, and certain variants in Africa, South Asia and Latin America, ship without eSIM despite carrying an eSIM-capable model number. Check on the device: Settings › Connections › SIM manager. If Add mobile plan is there, you are fine.

iPhones bought in mainland China

Models produced for the Chinese domestic market carry two physical SIM trays and no eSIM at all. If your iPhone takes two plastic SIMs, no eSIM will install on it.

Pixel 3, sold in certain markets

Pixel 3 units sold in Australia, Japan and Taiwan, and some carrier-supplied units, shipped without working eSIM support. Pixel 4 and later are consistent worldwide.

Apple Watch and other wearables

Cellular Apple Watch models use eSIM, but they generally require a plan from the same carrier as the paired iPhone. Travel eSIMs do not work on them.

What definitely won't work

  • Every iPhone before the XS, including the original iPhone SE
  • iPhones sold in mainland China — two physical SIM trays, no eSIM at all
  • Most budget Android handsets under roughly $250, regardless of year
  • Most Chinese-domestic-market Android phones
  • Carrier-locked handsets, even when the underlying model supports eSIM
