Which network does the Italy eSIM use?

Is 5G available in Italy?
Yes, on plans marked 5G — Rome, Milan, Florence, Naples, Turin, Bologna and most large towns. The rest of the country runs on 4G/LTE, which is fast and covers the autostrada network and the coastline well.
How much data do I need for a week in Italy?
A small plan covers a week of maps, messaging and photos with hotel Wi-Fi for anything larger. Two weeks touring by car wants a mid-size plan because navigation runs all day; remote work puts you at the top of the ladder.
Does it work in Vatican City and San Marino?
Vatican City sits inside Rome and is served by the same Italian networks, so yes in practice — there's a separate Vatican City page if you want the plan named that way. San Marino appears on some of the deeper European plans — check the coverage list on the plan you pick.
Will I have signal on the Amalfi Coast and the islands?
Along the Amalfi road and in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, yes. Capri, Ischia, Sicily and Sardinia are all well covered in the towns and along the coast roads. The gaps are in the mountain interiors — the Sila in Calabria, inland Sardinia, the higher Apennines.
What about the Dolomites and Alpine passes?
Valley floors, ski resorts and the main passes have coverage. High trails and the back side of ridgelines lose it, which is normal mountain behaviour. Download offline maps for any serious hiking or via ferrata.
Will it work on Trenitalia and Italo trains?
Along most of the high-speed corridors between Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples, yes, with dropouts in the long Apennine tunnels. Onboard Wi-Fi is available on Italo and Frecciarossa services and is generally adequate for e-mail.
Do I need to show a passport to activate it?
No. Buying an Italian SIM in a shop requires a passport and a signed contract under Italian anti-terrorism rules — one of the more tedious SIM purchases in Europe. A roaming eSIM avoids that entirely.
Can I use it in France, Switzerland or Greece too?
Check the coverage list on the plan you pick — most Italy plans are regional and already include France, Switzerland and Greece, so one eSIM usually covers the whole route. France, Switzerland and Greece have their own pages if you'd rather start there.
