Coverage & network in France
The France eSIM runs on Orange, the former incumbent, whose rural and mountain footprint is the best in the country. That’s the whole reason to care which network a French plan uses — in Paris they’re all fine, but in the Massif Central, the Ardèche or above 1,500 m in the Alps, Orange is the one still showing bars.
Plans run from $5 for 1 GB over 7 days to $38 for 20 GB over 30 days. A week in Paris fits in 3 GB ($10); two weeks driving Provence and the Dordogne is nearer 5 GB ($15).
Coverage: 5G in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nice and Lille. The Paris Métro is covered including the tunnels, as is the RER. TGV corridors hold a connection for most of a journey. Corsica is included and well served.
Not included, despite the map: Monaco runs its own network. Andorra runs its own network. Both sit close enough to the border that phones sometimes latch onto them by accident — worth knowing, because that’s a roaming charge rather than a plan. The overseas départements — Réunion, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy — are all separate destinations here.

France eSIM questions
Which network does the France eSIM use?
Orange, the former incumbent and still the network with the best rural and mountain coverage in France. In Paris every operator is fine; in the Ardèche, the Massif Central or the high Alps, Orange is the one that works.
Does it work on the Paris Métro and RER?
Yes. Mobile coverage has been deployed across the Métro network including tunnels, and the RER lines are covered too. It's one of the better-connected metro systems in Europe.
Is 5G available in France?
Yes, in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nice, Lille and most large cities. Elsewhere you're on 4G/LTE, which covers the autoroute network, the TGV lines and the coastline well.
How much data do I need for a week in Paris?
3 GB ($10) covers a week comfortably — maps, Citymapper, messaging, photos. Free Wi-Fi in cafés and museums does some of the work. Two weeks touring by car is closer to 5 GB ($15) because navigation runs continuously.
Will it work on the TGV?
Along most of the high-speed network, yes, with dropouts in tunnels and cuttings. Coverage is best on the LGV Sud-Est and Atlantique corridors. Onboard Wi-Fi exists on most TGV INOUI services.
What about the Alps and Pyrenees?
Resorts, valley floors and the main passes are covered — Chamonix, Val d'Isère, Les Deux Alpes and the Tour de France cols all have signal. High trails and the far side of ridgelines don't. Standard mountain rules: download offline maps before you go up.
Are Corsica and the overseas territories included?
Corsica, yes — it's covered by the mainland French networks and this plan. Overseas départements are separate destinations: Réunion, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy each have their own plan.
Do I need ID to activate it?
No. French prepaid SIMs require identity registration; a roaming eSIM doesn't. Install before you fly, enable data roaming on the travel line when you land.
Can I use it in Monaco, Switzerland or Belgium?
Monaco runs its own network and is not included. Switzerland is not in the EU and has its own plan from $6.50. Belgium has its own from $5. For a multi-country trip, the Europe plan covers 47 destinations from $7.50 and is usually the better deal.
Can I tether?
Yes, hotspot is enabled on every France plan. Useful on the TGV and in gîtes, where the advertised Wi-Fi and the actual Wi-Fi are often different things.
