Coverage & network in Spain
Spain’s eSIM runs on Movistar, the operator with the widest reach outside the cities — the difference shows on the Camino, in Extremadura and along the quieter stretches of the Atlantic coast rather than in Barcelona, where every network is fine.
Plans run from $5 for 1 GB over 7 days to $38 for 20 GB over 30 days. A week of city breaks fits in 3 GB ($10); two weeks driving Andalusia with the map on is closer to 5 GB ($15).
Coverage: 5G in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Malaga and most provincial capitals. Strong LTE along the Mediterranean coast, the AP motorways and the AVE corridors. The Balearics are well served. Thin spots are the Pyrenean high valleys, parts of the Picos de Europa, and the empty interior between Madrid and Extremadura.
Two things travellers get wrong here. The Canary Islands were sold as a separate product on the old site and still have their own page — network-wise they’re Spanish, but check which plan you bought. And Andorra is not Spain and not the EU: it is not included in this plan or in EU roaming, and phones routinely latch onto Andorran networks near the border. There’s a separate Andorra plan.

Which network does the Spain eSIM use?
Movistar, the largest Spanish operator and the one with the deepest rural coverage — which matters in Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and along the Camino de Santiago far more than it does in Barcelona.
Are the Canary Islands and Balearics included?
The Balearics — Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera — are covered by this plan. The Canary Islands are listed separately on this site as Canary Islands from $5.50 because they were sold as their own product; in network terms they run on the same Spanish operators. If you're visiting both, the Europe plan from $7.50 removes the question.
Is 5G available in Spain?
Yes, widely. Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Malaga and most provincial capitals have real 5G. Everywhere else is 4G/LTE with good coverage along the coast, the AP motorways and the AVE rail corridors.
How much data do I need for a week in Spain?
3 GB ($10) is comfortable for a week of city breaks and beaches. A two-week road trip through Andalusia with navigation running is nearer 5 GB ($15). 10 GB ($23) if you're working from Barcelona or Valencia for a month.
Will it work on the AVE high-speed trains?
Along most of the Madrid–Barcelona, Madrid–Seville and Madrid–Valencia corridors, yes, with dropouts in tunnels. Onboard Wi-Fi via the Renfe app is available on many services.
What about walking the Camino de Santiago?
Coverage along the Camino Francés is better than most walkers expect — the villages, albergues and towns are all connected. The gaps are on the higher stages: the climb over the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles, O Cebreiro and the Cruz de Ferro section. Download the stage maps offline.
Do I need to register or show a passport?
No. Spanish prepaid SIMs require ID registration at the point of sale; a roaming eSIM does not. Install it before you fly and it connects on landing.
Can I use it in Portugal, France or Andorra?
Not the Spain plan. The Europe plan covers 47 destinations from $7.50, which is the right answer for an Iberian loop. Individually, Portugal from $5, France from $5 and Andorra each have their own plan — Andorra in particular is not an EU roaming destination, so don't assume it's included in anything.
Can I tether?
Yes, hotspot is enabled on all Spain plans. Worth having in a country where apartment and hostel Wi-Fi ranges from excellent to theoretical.
Can I still receive calls on my own number?
Yes. The eSIM is a data-only second line and your home number stays reachable for calls, SMS and bank codes. Switch data roaming off for the home line so it doesn't pick up charges in the background.
