Coverage & network in Canary Islands

A Canary Islands eSIM installs before you fly and activates on arrival, so the map, the ride-hailing app and your messages all work from the airport — the eSIM attaches to Movistar.

Plans run from $5.50 for 1 GB over 7 days up to $42 for 20 GB over 30 days. Two weeks of navigation, messaging and the occasional video call generally lands around 5 GB.

Where 5G has been rolled out you’ll get it; everywhere else the plan runs on 4G/LTE. Both are far more than maps and messaging need — the difference only shows on large downloads. Tethering is allowed on every Canary Islands plan, so a laptop or a travelling companion can share the connection.

Crossing borders on the same trip? The Europe plan covers 47 destinations on one profile from $7.50. Otherwise there are separate plans for Andorra from $8.50, Austria from $5.50 and Belarus from $9.50.

How to install it

  1. 1

    Buy in a minute

Pick a Canary Islands plan and pay. Your QR code arrives by email in seconds — no account, no shipping.

  2. 2

    Install on Wi-Fi

Scan the code before you fly. The profile sits alongside your normal SIM and stays switched off until you need it.

  3. 3

    Land connected

Turn on data roaming for the TravelNet line when you arrive. The plan starts counting down on that first connection, not at checkout.

Will my phone work?

You need an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone: an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship. Dial *#06# — if an EID number is listed alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM.

Travelling beyond Canary Islands?

One Europe plan covers 47 countries from $7.50 — worth it from the third border.

Canary Islands eSIM questions

Which network does the Canary Islands eSIM use?

Movistar. It is one of Canary Islands's main mobile networks, so coverage matches what local subscribers get rather than a thin roaming-only footprint.

Will I get 5G in Canary Islands?

Yes, where Movistar has deployed it and your phone supports it. Outside those areas the eSIM falls back to 4G/LTE automatically — you won't need to change any setting.

How much data do I actually need for Canary Islands?

As a rough guide: navigation and messaging burn around 100–200 MB a day, social media roughly 500 MB an hour, and video calls about 1 GB an hour. A short trip fits inside the 3 GB plan ($11); a fortnight of heavier use is closer to 10 GB ($25.50).

When does my Canary Islands plan start counting down?

When the eSIM first connects to a network in Canary Islands, not when you buy it. Install it at home a day or two before you fly — the 1 GB plan then gives you 7 days from arrival and the larger plans 30 days.

Can I use my Canary Islands eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes. Tethering is enabled on every Canary Islands plan, so you can share the connection with a laptop, a tablet or someone travelling with you. Hotspot data comes out of the same allowance.

Can I keep my own phone number while I'm in Canary Islands?

Yes. Nothing is removed from your phone. The Canary Islands profile is added as a second line and set as the one used for data, while your usual number keeps receiving calls, texts and bank verification codes. Switch data roaming off on the home line before you fly.

Do I need to register or show a passport to use a Canary Islands eSIM?

No. The plan roams on a partner network, so there's no local SIM registration, no ID upload and no shop visit. You buy it, scan the QR code, and it works on arrival.

What happens if I run out of data in Canary Islands?

You can top up from the same page — buy another Canary Islands plan and it queues behind the current one on the same eSIM profile. There's no need to reinstall anything or scan a second QR code.

I'm also visiting Andorra and Austria — do I need separate eSIMs?

Not necessarily. The Europe plan covers 47 destinations including Canary Islands on a single profile from $7.50. If Canary Islands is the bulk of the trip, a country plan plus a top-up is usually cheaper; if you're crossing several borders, the regional plan wins.

Will my phone work with a Canary Islands eSIM?

If it's an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship, almost certainly — and it must be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID number: if one is listed, the phone has an eSIM. Our compatibility list has the full set.
