The UK eSIM runs on EE, which is the right default: it has the widest 4G footprint of the four national networks and the strongest rural coverage in Scotland, Wales and the southwest.
Plans run from $6 for 1 GB over 7 days to $45.50 for 20 GB over 30 days. A week in London genuinely fits inside 3 GB ($12) — free Wi-Fi in pubs, cafés, museums and stations does a lot of the work.
The Underground question. Mobile coverage now reaches most platforms and a growing share of tunnels on the Central, Northern, Jubilee, Victoria, Bakerloo and Elizabeth lines, so you can keep a connection through much of a journey. Where mobile signal stops, station Wi-Fi picks up the platforms.
Beyond London: 5G in every major city, solid 4G along the motorway and mainline rail network, and real notspots in mid-Wales, the Highlands, the Lake District interior and parts of the Peak District. That is a geography problem, not a network problem — no UK operator covers them.

Which network does the UK eSIM use?
EE, which has the largest 4G and 5G footprint of the four UK networks and the best coverage in Scotland, Wales and the rural southwest. If you're going beyond the cities, it's the one you'd choose.
Does it work on the London Underground?
Increasingly. Mobile coverage has been rolled out across most Underground platforms and tunnels on the Central, Northern, Jubilee, Elizabeth, Victoria and Bakerloo lines, with more sections added regularly. Where there's no mobile signal, station Wi-Fi covers the platforms. The Elizabeth line has coverage along essentially its whole route.
Is 5G available in the UK?
Yes, across all the major cities and most large towns. Rural areas are 4G, and there are still genuine notspots in mid-Wales, the Highlands and parts of the Lake District and Peak District — no UK network has solved those.
How much data do I need for a week in London?
3 GB ($12) covers a normal week: maps, Citymapper, messaging, e-mail and some browsing. Free Wi-Fi is everywhere — pubs, cafés, museums, most of the rail network — so mobile use stays low. Go to 5 GB ($18) for a longer trip or if you're working.
Does it cover Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
Yes, the plan is UK-wide including all three, plus the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are covered by separate arrangements you should check rather than assume. Highland and island coverage follows the roads and settlements; the interior of the Cairngorms and much of the Outer Hebrides is patchy on any network.
Will it work on the train — LNER, Avanti, GWR?
Mostly, with dropouts. Mainline routes have reasonable coverage between stations and lose it in cuttings and tunnels. Onboard Wi-Fi exists on most intercity services and is variable. Download what you need before a long journey.
Is Ireland included?
No — the Republic of Ireland is a separate country and needs the Ireland plan. Northern Ireland is included in this UK plan. If you're doing both, the Europe plan from $7.50 covers 47 destinations on one profile.
Do I need to register or show ID?
No. The UK doesn't require SIM registration at all, and a roaming eSIM certainly doesn't. Install, land, switch on data roaming for the travel line.
Can I tether?
Yes, hotspot is enabled on every UK plan. Useful on trains and in the many places where the free Wi-Fi wants an e-mail address and a marketing opt-in before it lets you online.
Can I make calls with it?
Not over the cellular network — it's a data-only plan. WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal and Teams calls all work normally over the data connection, and your own number stays active on your home line for regular calls and texts.
