Coverage & network in Portugal
Data in Portugal without the roaming bill: buy the plan now, scan the QR code once, and the profile sits dormant on your phone until you arrive.
Plans run from $5 for 1 GB over 7 days up to $38 for 20 GB over 30 days. On a week-long trip, maps, messaging and a normal amount of scrolling usually fit inside the 3 GB plan.
5G is live in Portugal, and the eSIM will use it wherever your handset and the network both support it. Away from the cities you’ll drop to 4G/LTE, which is what most of the country actually runs on. Tethering is allowed on every Portugal plan, so a laptop or a travelling companion can share the connection.
Crossing borders on the same trip? The Europe plan covers 47 destinations on one profile from $7.50. Otherwise there are separate plans for Hungary from $4.50, Iceland from $8 and Ireland from $6.
How to install it
- 1
Buy in a minute
Pick a Portugal plan and pay. Your QR code arrives by email in seconds — no account, no shipping.
- 2
Install on Wi-Fi
Scan the code before you fly. The profile sits alongside your normal SIM and stays switched off until you need it.
- 3
Land connected
Turn on data roaming for the TravelNet line when you arrive. The plan starts counting down on that first connection, not at checkout.
Will my phone work?
You need an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone: an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or
newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship. Dial *#06# — if
an EID number is listed alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM.
Travelling beyond Portugal?
One Europe plan covers 47 countries from $7.50 — worth it from the third border.
Portugal eSIM questions
Which network does the Portugal eSIM use?
MEO. It is one of Portugal's main mobile networks, so coverage matches what local subscribers get rather than a thin roaming-only footprint.
Will I get 5G in Portugal?
Yes, where MEO has deployed it and your phone supports it. Outside those areas the eSIM falls back to 4G/LTE automatically — you won't need to change any setting.
How much data do I actually need for Portugal?
Most travellers over-buy. Maps and messaging for a week is under 2 GB; streaming and video calls are what move the number. Start at 3 GB ($10) and top up if you run short — the 10 GB plan ($23) is for remote work and heavy streaming.
When does my Portugal plan start counting down?
When the eSIM first connects to a network in Portugal, not when you buy it. Install it at home a day or two before you fly — the 1 GB plan then gives you 7 days from arrival and the larger plans 30 days.
Can I use my Portugal eSIM as a hotspot?
Yes. Tethering is enabled on every Portugal plan, so you can share the connection with a laptop, a tablet or someone travelling with you. Hotspot data comes out of the same allowance.
Can I keep my own phone number while I'm in Portugal?
Yes — that's the main reason to use an eSIM rather than a local SIM. Your home line stays active for calls, SMS and two-factor codes; the Portugal eSIM sits alongside it as a data-only line. Leave data roaming off for your home line to avoid a surprise bill.
Do I need to register or show a passport to use a Portugal eSIM?
No. The plan roams on a partner network, so there's no local SIM registration, no ID upload and no shop visit. You buy it, scan the QR code, and it works on arrival.
What happens if I run out of data in Portugal?
You can top up from the same page — buy another Portugal plan and it queues behind the current one on the same eSIM profile. There's no need to reinstall anything or scan a second QR code.
I'm also visiting Hungary and Iceland — do I need separate eSIMs?
Not necessarily. The Europe plan covers 47 destinations including Portugal on a single profile from $7.50. If Portugal is the bulk of the trip, a country plan plus a top-up is usually cheaper; if you're crossing several borders, the regional plan wins.
Will my phone work with a Portugal eSIM?
If it's an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship, almost certainly — and it must be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID number: if one is listed, the phone has an eSIM. Our compatibility list has the full set.
