Coverage & network in Turkey
Turkey has strong coverage across Istanbul, the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, Cappadocia and the main Anatolian routes.
The IMEI question. Turkey is the country travellers hear scary things about, so: yes, Turkey restricts foreign handsets on local networks after roughly 120 days of in-country use unless the phone’s IMEI is registered and a fee paid. It targets grey-market phone imports, not tourists. A holiday, a business trip, even a month-long stay is nowhere near it — and because it’s a handset rule rather than a SIM rule, using an eSIM neither triggers it nor avoids it. Long-stay residents should look into registration; everyone else can forget it.
Coverage: 5G in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir on 5G-marked plans. Reliable LTE in Göreme and the Cappadocia balloon fields, across Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye and Kaş, and along the main motorways. Thinner on the Lycian Way and in the higher Taurus and eastern Anatolian mountains.

Which network does the Turkey eSIM use?
A major Turkish network — the profile attaches on arrival under a roaming agreement, with coverage across Anatolia, the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts and Cappadocia. We don't lock plans to one named operator.
What is the IMEI registration rule and does it affect me?
This is the important one. Turkey blocks foreign handsets from local networks after roughly 120 days of use in the country unless the IMEI is registered and a fee paid. It is aimed at people importing phones, not tourists — a normal holiday or business trip is nowhere near the threshold. It also applies to the handset, not the SIM, so it isn't something an eSIM changes either way. If you're staying for months, look into IMEI registration; if you're visiting for two weeks, ignore it.
Is 5G available in Turkey?
Yes, in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and the larger cities, on plans marked 5G. The rest of the country is on 4G/LTE, which is fast and covers the coastal resorts, the motorway network and Cappadocia comfortably.
How much data do I need for two weeks in Turkey?
A mid-size plan suits a two-week Istanbul, Cappadocia and coast itinerary; a week in Istanbul alone fits a small one. Working or hotspotting pushes you up the ladder.
Are WhatsApp and social media accessible in Turkey?
Generally yes, but Turkey has a history of temporarily throttling or restricting social platforms during major news events. That's a network-level action applied to all operators including roaming traffic, so no provider can guarantee otherwise. It's occasional and short-lived, not a routine condition.
Will it work in Cappadocia and on the coast?
Yes. Göreme, Ürgüp and the balloon launch sites have solid coverage, as do Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye, Kaş and the whole Turquoise Coast. The Lycian Way and the higher stretches of the Taurus mountains are where it thins.
Do I need to register the eSIM with my passport?
No. Turkish prepaid SIMs require passport registration at the point of sale. A roaming eSIM has no registration step at all.
Is Northern Cyprus included?
Not usually — Northern Cyprus runs its own networks and is a separate destination with its own page. This catches people out on Cyprus trips, because phones near the buffer zone can switch sides without you noticing.
Can I use it in Greece or Georgia?
