Coverage & network in Tonga
A Tonga eSIM installs before you fly and activates on arrival, so the map, the ride-hailing app and your messages all work from the airport — the eSIM attaches to Digicel Tonga.
Plans run from $8 for 1 GB over 7 days up to $61 for 20 GB over 30 days. The 1 GB plan is a short-stay or backup option; anything longer than a long weekend is better served by 5 GB.
Coverage here is 4G/LTE. It handles navigation, messaging, calls over data and streaming without complaint, and it reaches considerably further than any 5G rollout currently does. Tethering is allowed on every Tonga plan, so a laptop or a travelling companion can share the connection.
Crossing borders on the same trip? The Oceania plan covers 3 destinations on one profile from $6.50. Otherwise there are separate plans for Australia from $5.50 and New Zealand from $6.
How to install it
- 1
Buy in a minute
Pick a Tonga plan and pay. Your QR code arrives by email in seconds — no account, no shipping.
- 2
Install on Wi-Fi
Scan the code before you fly. The profile sits alongside your normal SIM and stays switched off until you need it.
- 3
Land connected
Turn on data roaming for the TravelNet line when you arrive. The plan starts counting down on that first connection, not at checkout.
Will my phone work?
You need an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone: an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or
newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship. Dial *#06# — if
an EID number is listed alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM.
Travelling beyond Tonga?
One Oceania plan covers 3 countries from $6.50 — worth it from the third border.
Tonga eSIM questions
Which network does the Tonga eSIM use?
Digicel Tonga. It is one of Tonga's main mobile networks, so coverage matches what local subscribers get rather than a thin roaming-only footprint.
Will I get 5G in Tonga?
No. Tonga plans run on 4G/LTE, which is what the network covers reliably. For maps, messaging, calls over data and streaming the difference is not something you'll notice.
How much data do I actually need for Tonga?
Most travellers over-buy. Maps and messaging for a week is under 2 GB; streaming and video calls are what move the number. Start at 3 GB ($16) and top up if you run short — the 10 GB plan ($37) is for remote work and heavy streaming.
When does my Tonga plan start counting down?
When the eSIM first connects to a network in Tonga, not when you buy it. Install it at home a day or two before you fly — the 1 GB plan then gives you 7 days from arrival and the larger plans 30 days.
Can I use my Tonga eSIM as a hotspot?
Yes. Tethering is enabled on every Tonga plan, so you can share the connection with a laptop, a tablet or someone travelling with you. Hotspot data comes out of the same allowance.
Can I keep my own phone number while I'm in Tonga?
Yes. Nothing is removed from your phone. The Tonga profile is added as a second line and set as the one used for data, while your usual number keeps receiving calls, texts and bank verification codes. Switch data roaming off on the home line before you fly.
Do I need to register or show a passport to use a Tonga eSIM?
No. The plan roams on a partner network, so there's no local SIM registration, no ID upload and no shop visit. You buy it, scan the QR code, and it works on arrival.
What happens if I run out of data in Tonga?
You can top up from the same page — buy another Tonga plan and it queues behind the current one on the same eSIM profile. There's no need to reinstall anything or scan a second QR code.
I'm also visiting Australia and New Zealand — do I need separate eSIMs?
Not necessarily. The Oceania plan covers 3 destinations including Tonga on a single profile from $6.50. If Tonga is the bulk of the trip, a country plan plus a top-up is usually cheaper; if you're crossing several borders, the regional plan wins.
Will my phone work with a Tonga eSIM?
If it's an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship, almost certainly — and it must be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID number: if one is listed, the phone has an eSIM. Our compatibility list has the full set.
