Coverage & network in Thailand
Thailand’s mobile infrastructure is better than its price suggests — real 5G in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, and fast LTE well into the provinces. Thailand is a heavy Grab, Maps and LINE country, so usage climbs faster than a European trip.
Coverage: the BTS Skytrain and the MRT are covered including tunnels. Phuket, Samui, Phangan, Tao, Lanta and Phi Phi all have solid service in the towns and main beaches. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are strong. The gaps are boat crossings, the far side of small islands, the Similan and Surin dive trips, and the passes on the Mae Hong Son loop.

Thailand eSIM questions
Which network does the Thailand eSIM use?
A major Thai network — the profile attaches on arrival under a roaming agreement, with coverage across the islands, the northern provinces and the Isan region. We don't lock plans to one named operator; you get a mainstream network rather than a fringe one.
Is 5G available in Thailand?
Yes, and more widely than most visitors expect — Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya and the larger provincial cities all have real 5G, on plans marked 5G. Elsewhere it's fast 4G/LTE. Thailand's mobile infrastructure is genuinely good.
How much data do I need for two weeks in Thailand?
A mid-size plan is right for a typical two-week Bangkok-plus-islands trip. Thailand is a heavy Grab, Google Maps and LINE country, so usage adds up. Go a size up if you're working from Chiang Mai or hotspotting a laptop.
Will I have signal on Koh Phi Phi, Koh Tao and the smaller islands?
On the developed islands — Phuket, Samui, Phangan, Tao, Phi Phi, Lanta — yes, good coverage in the towns and along the main beaches. The far side of the smaller islands, the limestone karst bays and the boat crossings themselves are where it drops. Similan and Surin dive trips are effectively offline.
Do I need to register the eSIM with my passport?
No. Thai tourist SIMs require passport registration at the airport counter. A roaming eSIM skips it — install before you fly and it connects when you land at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang.
Does Grab work on it?
Yes. Grab is the default for taxis, motorbike taxis and food across Thai cities and needs only data. Drivers usually message in-app rather than calling, which suits a data-only line.
What about the north — Chiang Mai, Pai, the Mae Hong Son loop?
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are well covered including 5G. The Mae Hong Son loop has coverage in the towns and along much of the road, with real dead stretches over the passes. Pai is fine. Download offline maps if you're riding the loop.
Can I use it in Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos?
Can I tether?
Yes, hotspot is enabled on every Thailand plan. Handy for the long-stay crowd in Chiang Mai, where café Wi-Fi quality varies by the hour.
Will it work on the BTS Skytrain and MRT?
Yes, both the elevated Skytrain and the underground MRT have coverage throughout, including the tunnels.
