Coverage & network in Hong Kong

Data in Hong Kong without the roaming bill: buy the plan now, scan the QR code once, and the profile sits dormant on your phone until you arrive.

Plans run from $5 for 1 GB over 7 days up to $38 for 20 GB over 30 days. If you’re working while you travel, start at 10 GB — a video call burns roughly 1 GB an hour on its own.

5G is live in Hong Kong, and the eSIM will use it wherever your handset and the network both support it. Away from the cities you’ll drop to 4G/LTE, which is what most of the country actually runs on. Tethering is allowed on every Hong Kong plan, so a laptop or a travelling companion can share the connection.

Crossing borders on the same trip? The Asia plan covers 29 destinations on one profile from $11.50. Otherwise there are separate plans for Sri Lanka from $10.50, Taiwan from $5.50 and Thailand from $5.

How to install it

  1. 1

    Buy in a minute

Pick a Hong Kong plan and pay. Your QR code arrives by email in seconds — no account, no shipping.

  2. 2

    Install on Wi-Fi

Scan the code before you fly. The profile sits alongside your normal SIM and stays switched off until you need it.

  3. 3

    Land connected

Turn on data roaming for the TravelNet line when you arrive. The plan starts counting down on that first connection, not at checkout.

Will my phone work?

You need an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone: an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship. Dial *#06# — if an EID number is listed alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM.

Travelling beyond Hong Kong?

One Asia plan covers 29 countries from $11.50 — worth it from the third border.

Hong Kong eSIM questions

Which network does the Hong Kong eSIM use?

CSL. It is one of Hong Kong's main mobile networks, so coverage matches what local subscribers get rather than a thin roaming-only footprint.

Will I get 5G in Hong Kong?

Yes, where CSL has deployed it and your phone supports it. Outside those areas the eSIM falls back to 4G/LTE automatically — you won't need to change any setting.

How much data do I actually need for Hong Kong?

Count on 100–200 MB a day if you're mostly using maps and messaging, and 1 GB an hour once video is involved. That puts a long weekend in Hong Kong at 1–3 GB (from $5) and a two-week trip nearer 5–10 GB.

When does my Hong Kong plan start counting down?

When the eSIM first connects to a network in Hong Kong, not when you buy it. Install it at home a day or two before you fly — the 1 GB plan then gives you 7 days from arrival and the larger plans 30 days.

Can I use my Hong Kong eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes. Tethering is enabled on every Hong Kong plan, so you can share the connection with a laptop, a tablet or someone travelling with you. Hotspot data comes out of the same allowance.

Can I keep my own phone number while I'm in Hong Kong?

Yes — that's the main reason to use an eSIM rather than a local SIM. Your home line stays active for calls, SMS and two-factor codes; the Hong Kong eSIM sits alongside it as a data-only line. Leave data roaming off for your home line to avoid a surprise bill.

Do I need to register or show a passport to use a Hong Kong eSIM?

No. The plan roams on a partner network, so there's no local SIM registration, no ID upload and no shop visit. You buy it, scan the QR code, and it works on arrival.

What happens if I run out of data in Hong Kong?

You can top up from the same page — buy another Hong Kong plan and it queues behind the current one on the same eSIM profile. There's no need to reinstall anything or scan a second QR code.

I'm also visiting Sri Lanka and Taiwan — do I need separate eSIMs?

Not necessarily. The Asia plan covers 29 destinations including Hong Kong on a single profile from $11.50. If Hong Kong is the bulk of the trip, a country plan plus a top-up is usually cheaper; if you're crossing several borders, the regional plan wins.

Will my phone work with a Hong Kong eSIM?

If it's an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship, almost certainly — and it must be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID number: if one is listed, the phone has an eSIM. Our compatibility list has the full set.
