Isn't Hawaii covered by a United States plan?
Usually, yes — Hawaii is a US state on US networks. It's listed separately here because the original TravelNet catalogue sold it as its own product and the old links still point at it. Which network does it use?
T-Mobile, which has good coverage across all four main islands — Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island — including 5G in Honolulu and the larger towns.
Will I have signal on the Road to Hāna and in the national parks?
Along the Road to Hāna, patchily — there are long stretches through the rainforest with nothing, which is arguably the point. Haleakalā has coverage at the summit visitor area and little on the trails. Volcanoes National Park has service near the visitor centre and the Kīlauea overlooks, and none in the backcountry or along the Chain of Craters road.
How much data do I need for a week in Hawaii?
3 GB ($18) covers a week — hotel and condo Wi-Fi is widely available and most of what you'll use data for is maps, weather, surf reports and photos. 5 GB ($27) for two weeks or if you're hotspotting.
Is inter-island travel covered?
Yes — one plan works across all the islands. Flights between them are short enough that you'll be back on the ground before it matters.
Can I make calls?
Not over the cellular network — it's data-only. Worth planning around in the US, where rental car desks, activity operators and restaurants all default to texting a local number. Keep your home line active for SMS and use WhatsApp or FaceTime over the data.
Do I need to register it?
No. US prepaid SIMs sometimes want a local address, which visitors don't have. A roaming eSIM needs nothing.
Can I tether?
Yes. Useful on the Big Island, where accommodation Wi-Fi outside the resort areas can be slow.
Will it work on a snorkel or whale-watching boat?
Close to shore, yes. A few miles out, no — that's open ocean with no towers. Download anything you want to listen to before you board.
What about Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi?
Coverage exists in the settled areas and along the main roads, and thins quickly elsewhere. Both islands are small and quiet by design; treat connectivity as partial and download offline maps.
