Tanzania splits neatly into three connectivity problems: the cities, the northern safari circuit, and Zanzibar. The eSIM runs on Vodacom Tanzania, the operator with the widest rural reach, which is the one that matters once you leave Arusha.

Cities and coast: Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi and the whole of Zanzibar have dependable LTE, with 5G in parts of Dar and Arusha. Stone Town, Nungwi and Paje are all straightforward.
The parks: the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire have coverage at gates, airstrips, Seronera and the crater rim, and long dead stretches in between. The crater floor is unreliable. Download offline maps for the whole northern circuit before you leave Arusha — it is the single most useful thing you can do.
Kilimanjaro: good service on the approach and around Moshi, patchy on the mountain, effectively none through the forest zone. Climbers should treat summit day as offline.

Which network does the Tanzania eSIM use?
Vodacom Tanzania, the country's largest operator. Its coverage advantage over the alternatives shows up exactly where travellers go — the northern safari circuit, the Arusha–Moshi corridor and Zanzibar.
Will I have signal in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro?
Intermittently. There is service around Seronera, the park gates, the airstrips and the Ngorongoro crater rim, and long stretches with nothing in between. The crater floor itself is unreliable. Plan for offline maps and treat connectivity as a bonus rather than a given while you're inside the parks.
What about Zanzibar and Stone Town?
Zanzibar is well covered. Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje and the main coast roads all have solid LTE, and most hotels have Wi-Fi on top of it. It is the easiest part of a Tanzania trip to stay connected in.
Does it work on Kilimanjaro?
Lower down, yes — Marangu, Machame and Moshi have good coverage, and there is surprising service on parts of the mountain, particularly the southern routes and around Barafu. It thins out badly in the forest sections and near the summit. Do not build a summit-day plan around having signal.
Is 5G available in Tanzania?
In parts of Dar es Salaam, Arusha and a few other urban centres. Everywhere else, including all of the safari circuit, you are on 4G/LTE — which is more than enough for maps, WhatsApp and photo uploads.
How much data do I need for a safari and Zanzibar trip?
5 GB ($33) suits a typical ten-to-fourteen-day itinerary where lodge Wi-Fi handles the big uploads. Move to 10 GB ($50.50) if you're hotspotting a laptop or posting video daily. A Zanzibar-only beach week is comfortable on 3 GB ($22).
Can I use the same eSIM in Kenya?
No — the Tanzania plan is Tanzania-only. For the classic Mara–Serengeti crossing, either buy a Kenya plan from $12.50 alongside it, or take the Africa plan from $14.50, which covers 39 destinations including both on one profile.
Do I need to register the eSIM with my passport?
No. Tanzania's biometric SIM registration rules apply to locally issued lines. A TravelNet eSIM roams onto Vodacom under a partner agreement, so there's no registration, no fingerprinting and no shop visit.
Can I share the connection with the rest of my group?
Yes, tethering works on every Tanzania plan and it is a sensible group strategy — one person carries the data and hotspots the vehicle. Bear in mind that four phones on one hotspot will burn through an allowance quickly; the 10 GB plan is the realistic group option.
Will it work as soon as I land at Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam?
Yes, if you installed the profile before flying. Installation itself needs an internet connection, so scan the QR code at home. On landing, switch data roaming on for the TravelNet line and it registers on Vodacom within a minute or two.
