Coverage & network in South Africa

South Africa is one of the easier African markets to be a connected traveller in — broad LTE reach plus real 5G in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban.

What’s well covered: the metros, the N1, N2 and N3, the entire Garden Route, the Winelands, and the southern and central sections of Kruger including the main camps. Cell service along the Cape Peninsula is good enough that you can navigate Chapman’s Peak on live traffic.

What isn’t: northern Kruger beyond Punda Maria, the Cederberg, parts of the Drakensberg and the deeper Karoo. None of this is unusual for a country this size — but it does mean offline maps are worth downloading before a self-drive.

Load-shedding is the local wrinkle. Scheduled power cuts occasionally take mobile sites with them at higher stages, and they reliably take down guesthouse Wi-Fi. Mobile data is usually the more resilient of the two, which is an argument for the larger plan rather than the smaller one.

Crossing borders? The Africa plan page shows the regional profiles, and Botswana has its own page. Namibia and Zimbabwe are not currently covered by any plan we can sell — for those legs, a local SIM at the border town is the honest answer.

On the gift question: our sister shop My Safari Books sells illustrated safari activity books, which travel home rather better than the airport curios.

How to install it

  1. 1

    Buy in a minute

Pick a South Africa plan and pay. Your QR code arrives by email within minutes — no account, no shipping.

  2. 2

    Install on Wi-Fi

Scan the code before you fly. The profile sits alongside your normal SIM and stays switched off until you need it.

  3. 3

    Land connected

Turn on data roaming for the TravelNet line when you arrive. The plan starts counting down on that first connection, not at checkout.

Will my phone work?

You need an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone: an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or A-series flagship. Dial *#06# — if an EID number is listed alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM.

See the full compatibility list.

Travelling beyond South Africa?

One Africa plan covers up to 23 countries from $10.49 — worth it from the third border.

South Africa eSIM questions

Which network does the South Africa eSIM use?

A major South African network — the profile attaches on arrival under a roaming agreement, with an LTE footprint that covers the great majority of the population and, importantly for visitors, most of the Garden Route, the Kruger road network and the Winelands. We don't lock plans to one named operator.

Will I have signal in Kruger National Park?

In most of the southern and central park, yes — the camps (Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Satara) and the tarred roads have usable LTE. The far north around Punda Maria and Pafuri is much thinner, and off the main gravel loops you should expect to lose service. Private reserves on the western boundary are generally well covered.

Does load-shedding affect mobile data?

It can. Tower batteries cover most scheduled outages, but at higher load-shedding stages some sites in suburban and rural areas do drop, and you'll see slower speeds or a lost connection until power returns. Fibre-backed hotel Wi-Fi often goes down too. It's the one South Africa-specific thing worth knowing: keep offline maps and don't rely on a live connection for something time-critical during a scheduled slot.

Is 5G available in South Africa?

Yes, and it's well established by regional standards — Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban all have real 5G coverage, on plans marked 5G. Outside the metros you're on 4G/LTE, which is fast and consistent.

How much data do I need for a two-week trip?

A mid-size plan is the sensible default for a Cape Town, Garden Route and Kruger itinerary with hotel Wi-Fi filling the gaps. Go a size up if you're hotspotting a laptop or driving a lot and leaning on navigation all day.

Do I need to register the eSIM under RICA?

No. RICA applies to locally purchased SIM cards, which is why buying one at the airport involves your passport and a proof of address. A roaming eSIM connects under a partner agreement — nothing to register, nothing to sign.

Can I use it in Namibia, Botswana or Zimbabwe?

Check the coverage list on the plan you pick. For a cross-border self-drive, the Africa plan page shows profiles that cover much of the region — usually the right answer for a Botswana loop. Botswana has its own page; Namibia and Zimbabwe are not currently covered by any plan we can sell, so plan for local SIMs there.

Will Uber and Bolt work on it?

Yes. Both run in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria and need only data. Since the eSIM is data-only, drivers who want to call you won't get through on a local number — use the in-app chat, which most drivers do anyway.

Can I tether my laptop?

Yes, tethering is enabled on every South Africa plan. It's a genuinely useful backup during load-shedding, when fixed-line internet at guesthouses and cafés goes dark but the mobile network often stays up.

When does the plan start?

On first connection to a network in South Africa, not at purchase. Install before you fly — you need internet to install an eSIM, and you don't want to be hunting for airport Wi-Fi at OR Tambo to do it.
